Bicycles of Italy: A Cyclist’s Dream
A Journey Through Italy on Two Wheels
Bicycles fill the streets of Italy! A few years ago, we explored Verona, Milan, Florence, Tuscany, and Rome. Along the way, we spotted countless bicycles leaning against fences, stone buildings, and street signs. Some were sleek and stylish, others purely practical, but all seemed cherished by their owners.
If we weren’t on a whirlwind tour, we would have brought our mountain bikes. We had done this before, in 1993 and 1994, while filming Full Cycle: A World Odyssey. The mountains of Italy offer incredible terrain for cycling adventures.
Cycling Culture in Italy
I photographed bicycles that stood out—ones that looked like artwork against classic Italian backdrops. Italians, like most Europeans, adore their two-wheeled transports. However, helmets remain a rare sight, especially among women who likely prefer to keep their hair styled.
Just as mountain biking spread worldwide from the USA, perhaps helmet use will follow? After all, protecting your noggin is never out of style!
Riding Through Florence
Mark and I rented mountain bikes for a day in Florence, known for its cobblestone streets. We chose top-of-the-line bikes with shocks, which made all the difference. Without them, the ride would have felt like operating a jackhammer all day!
Yet, many Italian bicycles have no shocks. Maybe the secret to their endurance is a steady diet of olive oil and non-GMO pasta?
Why Rent a Bike in Italy?
Cycling allowed us to bypass traffic jams and reach places cars couldn’t go. If you visit Florence or any Italian city, rent a bike! Choose one with shocks and always rent a helmet.
