How New & Unique Videos Began

Once upon a time in sunny San Diego, back in the neon-tinged days of the 1980s, two creative souls—Patty Mooney and Mark Schulze—crossed paths in the most cinematic way. Patty was belting out songs in a stage play called “Pandora’s Box,” and Mark was setting up his camera on the balcony to document it. Their eyes met—hers lit with curiosity, his behind a lens—and in that flash, a creative partnership was born.

Both were rebels in their own right. Mark was already experimenting with the thrilling new medium of portable video, lugging around gear that today fits in your pocket. Patty was a poetic firecracker with a gift for story and song. When they came together, it wasn’t long before they began traveling the world—hitchhiking through Tahiti, backpacking across New Zealand, diving into Costa Rican jungles—all with a camera in hand and adventure in their hearts.

But the story really begins in 1985, in a small duplex in San Diego cluttered with tapes, notebooks, and dreams.

That year, Patty and Mark had an idea: What if they created a catalog of their original videotapes—educational, adventurous, sensuous, and spirited—and mixed in a few titles they hadn’t yet produced, just to test the waters? They placed a classified ad in several video magazines that simply read:

“New & Unique Videos” catalog — please send one dollar.

And wouldn’t you know it—the dollars started rolling in. More surprising than that, people began sending checks made out to “New & Unique Videos.” Patty and Mark looked at each other, laughed, and said, “Well, I guess we’d better start a company—so we can cash these checks!”

And just like that, New & Unique Videos was officially born—not from a business plan, but from a classified ad, a dream, and a mailbox full of possibility.

Now, four decades later, their company is still rolling—powered by love, creativity, and the spirit of invention that first brought them together on that theater balcony. New & Unique Videos continues to live up to its name, telling stories nobody else dares to tell.

And it all began with a one-dollar bill and a check you couldn’t cash without a company.

Massage for Relaxation instructional Video starring Cleo

New & Unique Videos  were early pioneers in producing several educational and sports videos beginning in 1985.  “Massage For Relaxation” was the first video on how to massage another, as well as yourself. “Anti-Terrorism: Weapons & Tactics” was the first anti-terrorism video. Then came “Common-Sense Self Defense For Women,” the first women’s self-defense video. Then came “California Big Hunks,” the first male erotic dance video. Patty was the mysterious voice, and Mark directed with flair. Who could have predicted that this video—decades later—would end up on late night talk shows and streaming platforms?

Extreme Sports Video Pioneers

After taking a year off in 1986 to travel around the North American continent in a small Chinook RV, Mark Schulze and Patty Mooney discovered a passion for the sport of mountain biking. They went on to produce several of the world’s first educational mountain biking videos.  The first was “The Great Mountain Biking Video” (1987).  Next came “Ultimate Mountain Biking: Advanced Techniques & Winning Strategies.  Consequently we followed that title with “Lessons in Cycling” starring Olympian and consummate road cyclist, John Howard.  John imparted the wisdom he had gained over years of competing and winning road races.

“Battle at Durango” documents the first-ever World Mountain Bike Championships, held in 1990 in Durango, Colorado. This groundbreaking event brought together the best mountain bikers from around the globe to compete in both cross-country and downhill races. The documentary features legendary riders like Ned Overend, Juli Furtado, Ruthie Matthes, Cindy Devine, and John Tomac, showcasing the raw excitement, grit, and athleticism that defined the early years of competitive mountain biking. It remains a vivid snapshot of a pivotal moment in the sport’s history.

Mission Statement

Lessons Cycling Behind the Scenes

Says Mark Schulze, “Our primary goal is to entertain and educate ourselves and others.  We want to produce high quality videos for diverse audiences, and have fun while doing it. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our many years of producing and distributing videos, it’s this:  Do what you love and love what you do.  It gives your creation — whether a video or other product, or a service — the positive edge that people want.”
