Gary Puckett and the Cruisin’ Gap
When we climbed aboard the Norwegian Epic on a cruise to Italy a month ago, we had no idea what surprises that Park West Galleries would have in store for us. Beyond the presence of several up-and-coming artists including Michael Godard, Scott Jacobs, Patrick Guyton and Tim Yanke, there was one more fantastic evening that thrilled everyone inside the Cavern Club. It’s a teeny little club fashioned after the original one where four pretty famous guys made their fortune – John, George, Paul and Ringo. (Ever notice how Ringo is always the last to be mentioned in any conversation about The Beatles?)
Remember Gary Puckett and the Union Gap? This band’s star rose quite high in the 60’s with hits like “Young Girl,” “Over You” and “Lady Willpower.” The band earned six consecutive gold records and Top Ten Billboard hits. So what an amazing surprise when he was introduced to a bunch of art lovers aboard the Epic.
How the Cruisin’ Gap Started
Gary Puckett is friends with the artist Scott Jacobs. And I believe the conversation went something like this, over a glass or two of wine:
Gary: Feel like jamming? I brought my guitar with me.
Scott: There’s a drum set in the Cavern Room. Maybe they’d let us jam in there.
Morrie Shapiro, Gallery Director at Park West Gallery: Why don’t we have an actual concert? You know, Patrick Guyton plays the bass!
Gary: Well, I’m game if you can procure the venue and if Pat wants to join.
Morrie: You’ve got it! As long as I can play the tambourine.
So with no further adieu, these are the videos we shot, documenting the experience with the cameras we brought aboard the Epic. With a professional set-up of our top-of-the-line lighting, fluid-head carbon-fiber Sachtler tripod and sound equipment they’d be more polished. But we know you’ll appreciate the raw and intimate quality of these. Enjoy your front row seats to Gary Puckett and the Cruisin’ Gap, a band that gathered for this one special moment.
