Mountain Bike Videos

The first Mountain Biking Video we produced was “The Great Mountain Biking Video” in 1987.

North American Journey

In 1986, my partner, Mark Schulze and I briefly “retired” from our video production business.  We cruised around North America in a small camper for nine months and 25,000 miles.  It was the adventure of our lives.  When we talk about it today, many people exclaim how lucky we were to do it.  But it wasn’t luck.  It was determination.

Highlights of the journey included:

  • A grizzly attack in the Yukon,
  • River rafting down the glacier-fed Athabasca River in a two-man Sevylor raft we bought at a K-Mart,
  • Fishing for trout in Oregon,
  • Hiking in Nova Scotia
  • and many other fantastic adventures.

First Mountain Bike Spotted

In Alaska, we saw a guy riding a bicycle through a river.  This sparked our curiosity about mountain biking. So when we returned to San Diego, we jumped into the sport. We bought a couple of inexpensive fat-tire bikes and challenged ourselves on the local trails.  We even got married with our mountain bikes in 1987 in Cleveland National Forest.

Mountain Bike Titles

By 1988, we were so passionate about mountain biking, we had two instructional mountain bike videos under our belts.  The first was called “The Great Mountain Biking Video.” It was so successful, we produced: “Ultimate Mountain Biking: Advanced Techniques and Winning Strategies.” Both titles earned a lot of press and subsequently, many awards.

Both videos featured top pros who are now considered “pioneers” of their sport, including John Tomac, Cindy Whitehead and Ned Overend.  The production of these videos would decades later lead us to become recipients of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 “Micro Business Award for Most Innovative Business.”

Mark and I still ride the trails every Saturday.  And we feel grateful to be able to commune with Mother Nature on our mountain bikes that now boast full suspension and 24 gears. The couple who play together, stay together.
