A crowd surges around the vintage Batmobile at the 2001 San Diego Comic Con

The vintage Batmobile was a highlight at the 2001 San Diego Comic Con..

Kids and Dads really seemed to get a kick out of it.  You could almost hear the TV series soundtrack swirling around in your head. Da da da da da da da da BATMAN! Pow! Zammo!  Blam!

Over the years, as the San Diego Comic Con has exploded, the appearance of vintage television “props” really attracts large crowds.  And why not?  They just don’t make cars like this anymore.

Electric Playground

That year we were shooting for Electric Playground, Canada’s biggest TV show related to video games and technology. Producer, Victor Lucas and his pal, Tommy Tallarico, couldn’t be happier to get a “ride” in the vintage Batmobile.  Frankly, in the two days we spent as part of the Electric Playground crew, I never saw Victor smile so much.

Mark Schulze, Director of Photography, wore his trusty Easyrig 2 which really takes the pressure off a camera operator’s shoulders and back. It’s turned out to be one of the best video equipment investments we’ve ever made; he still uses it all the time; it still performs beautifully. And we recommend it to any camera operator, especially if he or she suffers from lower back pain.

There were several Comic Con participants who wondered if Mark was some kind of an action hero.  That’s because the Easyrig looks like some kind of a strange exoskeleton.

We shot interviews and B-Roll all that weekend for Electric Playground.  And we cruised around the convention floor like there was no tomorrow. But by far the vintage Batmobile was the thing that yanked the cranks of Victor and Tommy.
