Wounded Warriors
Summer Sports Clinic A Smashing Success
Wounded warriors are some of the most generous people out there. “All gave some and some gave all.” In other words, veterans served our country for the freedoms we enjoy, by risking life and limb as a member of the US military.
A few years ago, the VA asked us to help them with their Wounded Warriors Summer Sports Clinic Video. We couldn’t have been more thrilled. It was both an honor and an education to videotape interviews of wounded warriors who participated in the San Diego Summer Sports Clinic.
The veterans came to us fresh from a day on a surf board, at the Olympic Center, on a judo mat or in a kayak. They were so happy they took the leap. Many of them had injuries ranging from lost limbs and blindness to Brain Trauma Injury. BTI is the signature wound of today’s modern warfare. These veterans told us they thought their life was over and that they would never be able to practice any sports again. One of the veterans even shared with us that he had considered suicide. To learn that life had more in store for them was the best thing that had ever happened to them.
New Lease on Life
They overwhelmingly enjoyed the summer sports. Many times the only thing standing in the way of trying a new sport, or returning to a sport they had once loved, was encouragement from others.
They shared their feelings about the Veterans Administration. Most of them said that they thought the VA was doing good work. The veterans realized that there are many soldiers returning home from modern wars. And that sometimes this would result in filled waiting rooms and long wait times. But these veterans couldn’t have been more enthusiastic about the staff. “They are doing great work,” one of the veterans told us.
Above is the video we put together that was shown at their Closing Ceremony. According to our client, “It brought some great energy at the closing ceremony. Mission accomplished!”
